Becky Brennan, Community Fundraiser at North Devon Hospice, shares how the incredible efforts of the North Devon community - big or small - make a real difference to local people at a time when they need it most.
At your local hospice, we see every day how the generosity of our brilliant North Devon community transforms lives. Whether hosting a coffee morning at your local hall, putting on a quiz night with friends, or taking on the incredible feat of running a marathon, every effort you make as a fundraiser has a real and lasting impact on the care we provide.
Community fundraising isn’t just about raising money; it’s about coming together to support a cause that touches so many lives across North Devon. From a last-minute bake sale to the most daring skydive, believe me when I say the funds raised by local people are the lifeblood of the hospice, ensuring our care teams can continue to wrap patients and families up in a blanket of support at their most vulnerable moments.
At North Devon Hospice, we provide compassionate care for those facing life-limiting illnesses, whether that’s at the hospice here at Deer Park (Barnstaple) or in the comfort of people’s own homes. This wrap-around care extends to families too, offering support and guidance through what is always an incredibly challenging time. Crucially, all our services are provided free of charge, and that’s only possible because of the remarkable support we receive from you, our amazing community.
So, if you’ve got a fundraising idea that you believe will help the hospice, we want to hear about it! Every event, no matter the size, contributes to the vital care that so many in our community rely on in their final days. Hosting a coffee morning or bingo night might seem simple, but the funds raised can make a big difference. Did you know that just £50 could fund an hour of dedicated nursing on our Bedded Unit? It’s incredible to think that your efforts could directly support this vital work.
And for those looking to tackle a bigger challenge, community events like marathons, treks, or even skydives have the power to make an extraordinary impact. It’s always inspiring to meet people who are pushing themselves physically and mentally, all because they want to support North Devon Hospice. Their determination and generosity never fail to amaze me!
For me, one of the most heartwarming aspects of community fundraising is the stories behind each event. Often, people choose to raise funds in memory of a loved one who was cared for by the hospice. They tell us about the comfort and support their family received, and that their event or challenge is a way of giving back. These stories are the motivation behind why we do what we do and why your support matters so much.
If you’ve ever thought about hosting an event or taking on a challenge, now is the perfect time. The need for hospice care has never been greater but unfortunately, funds are getting more and more stretched as this need increases. This is where your support makes all the difference. Together, we can continue to provide the compassionate and wrap-around care that helps hundreds of local families through their toughest times.
