Most care is provided in the comfort of people’s homes, with teams of nurses who offer expert symptom management, as well as a hospice to home team offering round-the-clock care. When symptoms become more severe people can come for a stay on our bedded unit where specialist doctors and nurses can provide 24hour care in a homely and comfortable environment. Most people are able to return home with their symptoms under control, although some people do spend their final days at North Devon Hospice where we can help create precious moments and ensure the most comfortable and pain-free death possible
No, all our care is underpinned by emotional support for the whole family, throughout their entire journey. This involves counselling, group support, activities, relaxing therapies, bereavement support and specialist counselling for children facing the loss of a loved one
North Devon Hospice covers one of the largest areas of any local hospice in the UK. We support people over an area of 800 square miles ranging from Lynton and Exmoor in the north to Holsworthy and the Cornish borders of the south
Whilst the majority of care is provided in people’s own homes, we have two main hospice sites where an abundance of support is available. Deer Park on the outskirts of Barnstaple has been North Devon Hospice’s main site for over 25 years and has grown to meet the needs of our community including the addition of 24 hour care with our bedded unit in 2005. To support people in the most rural part of our catchment area, The Long House was built as a hospice outreach centre in 2015. Here people can access a range of care and support closer to home
We are funded by amazing people across North Devon who take part in our events, organise their own fundraising, play our weekly lottery, support our 12 local charity shops and leave us gifts in their wills. We are funded well below national levels by our local NHS, so we are entirely reliant on the generosity of our community to provide the vital care needed, to those facing a life-limiting illness
We care for people affected by a range of life-limiting illnesses. Most often, this is cancer, but also includes conditions such as motor neurone disease, heart failure, COPD, liver disease and more. Our care aims to make people live as well as they can for as long as possible, always going the extra mile to create precious moments along the way
